NLA Series
Compressor-duty phase converters. Built to handle the high locked-rotor amps that scroll and reciprocating compressors draw at startup.
Overview
Compressors, air handlers, chillers, and HVAC equipment draw 6–8× their nameplate amps at startup. Standard NL converters are sized for running load — they will struggle or fail to start high-LRA compressor motors reliably. The NLA Series is engineered specifically for compressor starting duty.
NLA units are oversized relative to their rated HP to provide the starting torque and current capacity these loads require. AutoLink is standard, which is critical for compressors: if power drops and restores while the compressor is under pressure, AutoLink ensures a safe, controlled restart.
Sizing Rule for Compressors
Size to 3× the compressor nameplate HP. A 5 HP compressor needs a GP15NLA minimum.
| Compressor HP | Converter Model |
|---|---|
| 1 HP | GP3NLA |
| 2 HP | GP5NLA |
| 3 HP | GP7NLA |

| 7.5 HP | GP20NLA |
| 10 HP | GP25NLA |
| 15 HP | GP40NLA |
| 20 HP | GP50NLA |

⚠️ Do Not Use NL for Compressors
Standard NL converters are not rated for compressor LRA. Using one will result in failed starts, tripped breakers, and premature converter wear.
