PL Series Phase Converters
The GP3PL through GP100PL are Phoenix's premium rotary phase converters — everything in the NL Series plus enhanced output filtering designed specifically for CNC machines, servo drives, and any equipment with sensitive electronics or tight voltage balance requirements.
Who needs the PL Series?
Choose the PL Series when your equipment has tight voltage balance requirements or sensitive electronic controls. The enhanced filtering reduces voltage ripple and harmonic distortion on the generated third leg, keeping CNC controllers, servo amps, and VFDs happy.
- CNC machining centers — Haas, Mazak, Fadal, Fanuc-controlled equipment
- CNC lathes and turning centers — requires <2% voltage imbalance
- Servo-driven equipment — press brakes with servo back gauges, automated feeders
- Laser cutters and plasma tables — sensitive to voltage noise
- Medical or lab equipment — any three-phase load requiring clean power
- Multi-axis machining — when multiple servo drives share the same converter
PL vs NL: What's Different?
The PL Series shares the same NEMA 4 steel enclosure, TEFC cast-iron idler motor, and lifetime warranty as the NL Series. The key difference is the output capacitor bank and filtering network:
- Enhanced capacitor bank — optimized for tighter voltage balance (<2% typical)
- Output line filtering — reduces harmonic content on the generated leg
- Voltage balance at light loads — maintains balance even at 25% load
- Better suited for variable loads — CNC machines cycle their loads constantly
For standard shop equipment like saws, grinders, and pumps, the NL Series is perfectly adequate and costs less. Save the PL for machines that demand it.

- NEMA 4 steel enclosure — weatherproof and dustproof
- TEFC cast-iron idler motor — long service life, quiet operation
- Enhanced output filtering — tight voltage balance for sensitive electronics
- Lifetime transferable warranty
- Made in Phoenix, Arizona
- AutoStart option available
Sizing the PL Series for CNC equipment
CNC machines are "hard" loads — they cycle between rapid traverse (low load) and cutting (full load) constantly. Use the 2.0× multiplier as a minimum. For spindle motors over 15 HP, or machines with multiple servo axes, go up one size.
| Equipment | HP | Multiplier | Converter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haas VF-2 (7.5 HP spindle) | 7.5 | × 2.0 | GP15PL |
| Haas VF-4 (20 HP spindle) | 20 | × 2.0 | GP40PL |
| Mazak QT-10 (10 HP) | 10 | × 2.0 | GP20PL |
| Bridgeport Mill (2 HP) | 2 | × 2.0 | GP5PL |
| Fadal VMC (15 HP) | 15 | × 2.0 | GP30PL |
CNC Sizing Rules of Thumb
- Always use the spindle motor HP, not the total machine HP
- If the machine has a servo coolant pump, add its HP to the calculation
- For two CNCs on one converter: (Machine 1 HP × 2.0) + (Machine 2 HP × 1.0)
- Voltage imbalance should be <2% for Haas, Mazak, Okuma, Fanuc
- When in doubt, call us — we've sized thousands of CNC installations

PL Series questions
Will the PL Series work with my Haas control?
Yes. The PL Series is specifically designed for CNC applications. Haas requires <2% voltage imbalance on their three-phase input — the PL Series consistently achieves this. We've installed hundreds of PL units with Haas VF, ST, and TL series machines.
Do I need the PL if I'm only running a manual Bridgeport?
A manual Bridgeport mill with a standard three-phase motor (no CNC control) will run fine on the NL Series. You only need the PL if the machine has a CNC control unit or sensitive drive electronics.
Can I run two CNC machines from one PL converter?
Yes, with proper sizing. Add the full multiplier for the largest machine plus the load of the second at half multiplier. Make sure the converter HP exceeds the combined requirement. Two machines also means more variable loading — call us to confirm sizing for dual-CNC setups.
What's the voltage imbalance spec on the PL Series?
Under typical shop loading (50–100% of rated load), the PL Series maintains <2% voltage imbalance on the three-phase output. At very light loads (<25%), imbalance may be slightly higher — this is normal for rotary converters and does not affect CNC operation since CNC machines are almost always under load when the spindle is running.
