NLT Series Phase Converters

The NLT Series solves a common problem: you have 230V single-phase utility power, but your equipment runs on 460V three-phase. The built-in step-up transformer converts the output voltage without any additional transformers or special wiring.

Who needs the NLT Series?

Many industrial machines — especially those built for factory or plant environments — are designed for 460V three-phase power. If you're setting up such equipment in a shop or facility that only has 230V single-phase service, the NLT Series bridges that gap.

  • Used industrial equipment — machinery designed for factory 460V service
  • Heavy metal fabrication — large press brakes, ironworkers, plate rolls
  • Large lathes and mills — machines rated 460V from original factory
  • Industrial pumps and HVAC — commercial 460V motors on residential service
  • Woodworking machinery — large European machines often run on 400V/460V

How the NLT Works

The NLT Series uses the same TEFC cast-iron idler motor as the standard NL Series, but adds a built-in step-up transformer on the output side. The converter first generates balanced three-phase power at 230V, then the transformer steps it up to 460V. This is more efficient and more reliable than using a separate external transformer.

Your single-phase input remains at 230V — the same service your shop already has. No utility upgrades needed.

NLT vs External Transformer

  • Single enclosure — converter and transformer in one NEMA 4 box
  • Optimized for the load — transformer is matched to converter capacity
  • No external wiring between components — reduces installation complexity
  • Sized correctly from the factory — no transformer sizing mistakes

Key Features

  • 230V single-phase input — standard residential/light commercial service
  • 460V three-phase output — true 460V for industrial equipment
  • Built-in step-up transformer — no external components needed
  • NEMA 4 steel enclosure
  • TEFC cast-iron idler motor
  • Lifetime transferable warranty
  • Made in Phoenix, Arizona
Sizing Guide

Sizing the NLT Series

Use the same load multipliers as the NL Series. The transformer is built in — you size by motor HP and load type, not by voltage.

EquipmentMotor HPMultiplierConverter Needed
460V press brake10 HP× 2.0GP20NLT
460V large lathe15 HP× 1.5GP25NLT
460V air compressor20 HP× 2.5GP50NLT
460V pump10 HP× 1.5GP15NLT

Important Sizing Notes

  • Size by the motor's HP rating on the nameplate
  • The built-in transformer handles the voltage conversion — don't add extra HP for it
  • Your input breaker is sized for 230V input current (higher amps than 460V output)
  • For very hard starts (compressors, HVAC), consider the NLTA Series with AutoLink balancing

FAQ

NLT Series questions

My motor nameplate says 440V. Will the NLT work?

Yes. 440V and 460V are both standard designations for what is effectively the same voltage class in the U.S. Your motor's nameplate may say 440V (older machines) or 460V — both are compatible with the NLT Series output.

Do I need a special transformer in addition to the NLT?

No. The step-up transformer is built into the NLT enclosure. You wire your 230V single-phase service in, and 460V three-phase comes out. Nothing else is needed between the converter and your equipment.

What's the difference between NLT and NLTA?

Both convert 230V single-phase to 460V three-phase. The NLTA Series adds the AutoLink automatic voltage balancing system, which continuously adjusts the capacitor switching to maintain balance as your load changes. NLTA is better for variable or hard-starting loads.

Can I run a CNC machine with an NLT?

For CNC applications requiring tight voltage balance and enhanced filtering, consider the PLT Series, which is the premium (filtered) version of the NLT. The NLT is suitable for general 460V loads; PLT is optimized for sensitive controls.
